Out in The Somme
See the beauty of the Somme! This Day Tour takes you south-west from Arras down through the scenic and rolling hills in that area of the Somme, and to Villers-Bretonneux where we will spend the morning. Lunch is in Albert before we move into selected areas of the Battle of the Somme for the afternoon. The Battle of The Somme belongs to the "brutal learning period of 1916" where much had to be learned about modern warfare, the allied losses in the first day of this Battle were staggering. This contrasts to the allied battles of 1918 where, after stopping the massive German thrust known as Operation Michael, the Germans were driven back so convincingly, that they knew it was all over.

Itinerary
Depart from Arras at around 9.00am
Brief visit to the Serre Road Cemetery No.2
Visit to the Australian National Memorial and Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery
Visit to the Victoria School in Villers-Bretonneux (Closed on Sundays)
Visit to the Franco-Australian Museum in Villers-Bretonneux (Closed on Sundays)
Visit to the Australian Corps Memorial at Le Hamel
View the Somme River near Sailly-le-Sec
View to the Australian 3rd Division Memorial above Sailly-le-Sec
Lunch in Albert
Visit to the Lochanagar Crater located just outside Albert
Visit to the British National Memorial for the Missing at Thiepval
Pause at Ulster Tower
Visit to Newfoundland Park to view and walk through weathered and authentic trenches
View and consider the Killing Fields of Mouquet (Moo Cow) Farm (Private Property)
Visit to the Australian 1st Division Memorial in Pozieres
Visit to the South African National Memorial in Delville Wood (if time permits)
Visit to the German War Cemetery in Sapignies (if time permits)
Return to Arras for the 6.00pm conclusion of Tour.
